Meet Co-Founder Barbara Kimbugwe – Miss Uganda, 2004-2005

“I’ve been giving the opportunity to stand up and be the light … to be the hope.”
Miss UgandaBarbara-with-school-children Kimbra Co-Founder Barbara Kimbugwe is passionate about nurturing and providing opportunity for the underserved children of Africa. As a child growing up in Kampala, Uganda, Ms. Kimbugwe was blessed to have what she considers the essentials … a loving family, food, shelter, clothing and education. Because of this her childhood, while humble, was a happy one! But living in such a small country, she was acutely aware that you didn’t have to travel far to find those who were much less fortunate … to find extreme poverty. This was reinforced during her reign as Miss Uganda 2004-2005 when she had the opportunity to visit villages throughout her country and see first-hand the needs of each. What she found in most cases was a desperate need for even the most basic human necessities such as food, shelter and clothing. She witnessed the malnutrition, illiteracy, disease and squalid surroundings in so many communities. And she saw that the precious children were the most underserved of all. These experiences further fueled her passion to reach out and help her country. Ms. Kimbugwe currently resides in the United States where she works and has continued her education. But her heart has always belonged to Uganda, and she has never forgotten the poverty and desperate need she saw in so many villages. Because of Ms. Kimbugwe’s deep love of her country and its people, and her strong commitment to helping the children of Uganda, the Kimbra Foundation was born. “I want to give back to Uganda … by the knowledge I’ve received … to be able to share it back home so that other people will be able to stand on their own two feet,” Ms. Kimbugwe says. To this day, Ms. Kimbugwe works tirelessly to increase awareness of the plight of African children — her KIMBRA KIDS! In her travels, she spreads a message of hope and support designed to increase their self-confidence and help nurture Uganda’s future leaders. Through the Kimbra Foundation Ms. Kimbugwe strives to provide children in Uganda the same opportunities of education and support that she has had in her life. Founded in 2013, the Kimbra Foundation offers guidance, mentorship and supportive services designed to enrich the lives of the youth through both physical and mental enriched programs and services. Providing for the family’s basic needs allows KIMBRA KIDS to focus on their education which improves their chances for a brighter future.
